Jazz, Geronimo and a Swingin’ Good TIme

Submitted by Laura Spehar, WA Reading Corps member serving at Fidalgo Elementary

The famous jazz band from Seattle began to play only to find no one dancing because they were too busy composing poems and meeting a famous children’s book character, Geronimo Stilton. This was the scene at our recent Fidalgo Family Fun Night event. Our event was entitled “All that Jazz”, and thanks to a generous contribution by a local foundation, we were supplied with great music and a swingin’ good time.

Laura, as the ever-popular “Geronimo Stilton”.

Hula hoops were spinning, a local pizza place was selling slices and proceeds of pizza sales were contributing to our school’s “mountain school” project. Some children could be found listening to our band students demonstrating their instruments in a special booth set up just for them, while others created crafty costumes for photo props.

With everything going on, including mural and poetry-making, most families could be found in one special place: the school’s library. We kicked off our “buy one get one free” (BOGO) book sale that evening with special guest, Geronimo Stilton. It was a wonderful evening full of smiles and a true sense of community supporting each other. We had around 200 people in attendance and I was the lucky AmeriCorps member to be in charge of it all!
