SNAP (food stamps)

AmeriCorps members may be eligible for the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) – also called “Basic Food” in Washington state and administered by DSHS – which provides low-income individuals a monthly benefit to buy food.

You can apply online or at a local Community Services Office. If you have questions about DSHS programs, you can read their FAQ or call 1-877-501-2233.

Have your project supervisor complete and sign our sample income verification letter, and submit with your SNAP application.

In addition, individuals on certain public assistance programs, such as SNAP, may qualify for a free cell phone (including free texts and a limited number of free minutes) through the Lifeline Assistance program and Assurance Wireless. Click here to learn more.

There’s an app for that! If you have an iTunes account, you can use an interactive map to find the places closest to you that accept SNAP EBT cards.
