My name is Katherine and I am an AmeriCorps Service Member serving with the Pierce Conservation District in Puyallup through the Washington Service Corps.
In my position, I work with the Harvest Pierce County Gleaning Project to harvest produce that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it to food banks. Since the start of my service term, we have harvested and donated 25,772 pounds of produce with the help of 330 volunteers—providing fresh produce to people who need it and keeping food waste out of landfills.
Although I really enjoy working with volunteers to harvest produce, my favorite part of gleaning is delivering the produce to food banks, where I get to see the fresh food we harvested go home with people who need it.
